Butte Chamber to honor Top Five Seniors of 2008
The Butte County Chamber of Commerce is holding their annual recognition luncheon for the five top seniors of the Class of 2008 for their academic accomplishments this Monday, May 5th, at noon in the BIC, announced Chamber President Kerry Bingham. This is a special time to honor and highlight our youth for the dedication they have given to excellence in education. It gives them an opportunity to share their accomplishments through their twelve years of education and also to share their goals for the future.
The five top academic seniors and their parents for the 2008 graduating class are as follows, in alphabetical order:
Julie Haralson—Brad and Sherry Haralson
Keslin King—Stephen and Lori King
Garrett Traughber—Tim and Dawn Traughber
Ashley Waddoups—Wade and Leann Waddoups
Taylor Wheeler—Darrell and Brenda Wheeler
The 5 top seniors will receive a plaque from their sponsors as part of their recognition. The sponsoring businesses are East Idaho Credit Union-Julie Haralson, Wells Fargo Bank-Keslin King, Advanced Autoworks-Garrett Traughber, Golden West Cafe-Ashley Waddoups, and The Galloping Goose-Taylor Wheeler.
A light luncheon will be served.Big Southern Butte road still closed for season
IDAHO FALLS – The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) will continue to keep the Big Southern Butte Road closed due to large pockets of snow. This road is a popular access to hang gliders and four-wheel-drive enthusiasts looking for a challenge to the top.
Even though the desert below the butte is drying out quickly, it is still winter on the butte. The road and portions of the butte has pockets of snow on the road and north facing slopes. The BLM anticipates the gate at the bottom of the butte to be open on May 23, 2008, depending on road conditions.
BLM maintains the five and a half mile road, which is on a 29% grade – within the ability of 4x4 vehicles only. The agency closes the road during the winter at the base of the mountain to minimize vandalism to its lookout tower at the summit and natural resources along the road.
Big Southern Butte, besides being popular as a viewpoint for hikers and hang gliders, is also a National Natural Landmark. Geologists estimate that the large butte immediately west of Atomic City, is approximately 300,000 years old. The butte is made mostly of rhyolite, and is older than most of the lava flows of the Upper Snake River Plain surrounding it.

Dale Tuma of Moore was hauling water about one mile west of Highway 33 near Deadman Canyon last Thursday at about 10:45 a.m., when he heard a loud pop. He reported the cab of the 1984 Peterbilt immediately filled with smoke and then started to burn. The truck was a total loss. Arco Fire Dept., Lost River Fire, and INL Fire extinguished the flames. Sarah Frazee of Arco, operating a 2003 Chevy Venture, was traveling north on Hwy 93 near Darlington on Thursday morning, April 24, when she reached to adjust her radio. She looked up to find herself in the southbound lane against oncoming traffic, overcorrected and went off the southbound side of the road, rolling once and coming to rest in a field. Lost Rivers EMTs transported the driver to Lost Rivers Medical Center where she was treated for minor injuries.
